New Direction® FAQs
Have questions about meal replacements, hunger, social situations, or what happens after you reach your goal? You’re in the right place.
Low-calorie, high-protein, low-carbohydrate products — including beverages, soups, puddings, protein bars and more — in a variety of flavors. They provide the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy while losing weight and come in convenient, single-serving packets.
Meal replacements can be a helpful tool for weight loss. They’re simple to use, require no calorie counting or meal planning, and provide balanced nutrition in a consistent format. For some patients, they help create structure, improve portion control, and make it easier to stay on track—especially in the beginning of a program.
Meal replacement programs are designed to simplify nutrition, reduce hunger, and support effective weight loss—but there are different ways to use them depending on your goals and lifestyle.
Full Meal Replacement (FMR)
A full meal replacement plan means all meals are replaced with medically formulated products such as shakes, soups, and bars. No outside food is included during this phase.
This approach provides:
Because everything is structured, it takes the guesswork out of eating and can be especially helpful for those who want a more intensive, “reset-style” approach.
Partial Meal Replacement (PMR)
A partial meal replacement plan offers more flexibility. Typically, two meals per day are replaced with meal replacement products, and one meal consists of a healthy, balanced whole-food option.
This approach provides:
Partial meal replacement is often used as a step-down from full meal replacement or as a starting point for those who prefer to include whole foods from the beginning.
Which is right for you?
Both approaches can be highly effective. The best choice depends on your goals, medical history, and lifestyle. We’ll work with you to determine the right plan—and adjust it over time—to support safe, sustainable, long-term success.
New Direction is a portion-controlled formula diet that uses “stimulus narrowing” — reducing the number of daily food choices so the plan is easier to follow consistently. Many people struggle to estimate portions accurately, and choices add up quickly; structure helps.
New Direction products offer:
Many patients really enjoy the taste of the meal replacements and like how easy they make meal planning. With no grocery shopping, meal prep, or dishes to worry about, they can simplify the day and make it easier to stay consistent.
New Direction has supported medically guided weight loss for over 40 years — it’s not a fad diet.
Yes. Robard’s New Direction meal replacements are medically designed, nutritionally complete products used as part of a structured weight management program. Unlike many over-the-counter shakes, these products are formulated with high-quality, clinically balanced protein to help preserve lean muscle mass during weight loss. The protein blend includes multiple sources with varying absorption rates, helping maintain steady amino acid levels and support metabolism.
These meal replacements are also nutritionally complete, providing essential vitamins and minerals needed to meet daily requirements. In fact, many formulations are designed to deliver 100% of recommended daily intake for key nutrients when used as directed, ensuring patients maintain proper nutrition even on lower-calorie plans.
One of the most common things patients notice on the Robard New Direction program is how much less hungry they feel compared to traditional dieting. This is largely due to the high-quality protein content in each meal replacement. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient—it helps reduce hunger hormones while increasing feelings of fullness, making it easier to stay on track without constant cravings.
In addition, the carefully structured balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats helps stabilize blood sugar levels, preventing the spikes and crashes that often lead to hunger and snacking. Many patients report feeling steady energy throughout the day, rather than the ups and downs they may have experienced with other diets.
Because these products are also nutritionally complete, the body is receiving the vitamins and minerals it needs. When nutritional needs are met, the body is less likely to trigger hunger signals driven by deficiencies.
The result is a program where patients often say, “I’m surprised how little I think about food,” making adherence not only easier—but far more sustainable.
Weight regain is far less likely when weight loss includes a structured transition and long-term maintenance plan. Once you reach your goal, we guide you through a gradual shift back to whole foods while focusing on sustainable habits. With continued education, support, and accountability, you’ll be better equipped to maintain your results for the long term.

No. Many store-bought powders are sold as dietary supplements, and the FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed.
New Direction products are selected for structured, medically guided weight management programs and paired with clinical monitoring.
Quality can vary widely in the supplement market. Consumer Reports has reported that many popular protein powders and shakes tested contained concerning levels of lead in at least some products tested.
Our program prioritizes structured products chosen for clinical use and consistency — along with physician oversight, monitoring, and support.
Sometimes—treatment is highly individualized. The decision to use medication depends on your medical history, lab results, weight loss goals, and how your body responds to the program.
In many cases, structured nutrition with programs like Robard meal replacements can be very effective on their own, helping reduce hunger, stabilize blood sugar, and support consistent weight loss.
For patients who do use medications—such as GLP-1 therapies—Robard’s research supports that meal replacements can be safely used alongside these treatments and may actually enhance results. They help ensure adequate protein and essential nutrients, which can sometimes be lacking due to reduced appetite on medications. They also support preservation of lean muscle mass and promote more balanced, sustainable weight loss.
If medication is appropriate, Dr. Conley will thoughtfully integrate it into your plan, using meal replacements and medical therapy together when beneficial, while closely monitoring your progress to ensure safety and long-term success.
We transition you into a maintenance strategy with continued support, education, and a realistic food plan. Our goal is not just weight loss — it’s building the habits and structure that help you keep it off.
We’ll discuss options to help you navigate social events. Many patients find that after an initial adjustment period, New Direction becomes the easiest part of their routine — even with a busy schedule.
Yes. Eating for comfort or stress relief is extremely common. The program includes behavior change support to help replace unhelpful patterns with healthier, more sustainable strategies.
Most patients find them pleasant and satisfying, but taste is personal. There are both sweet and savory options. Because these products are designed for structured weight loss, they are different from many commercial shakes in both nutritional design and intended use.
Many are, but some shakes and soups contain small amounts of lactose. Most lactose-intolerant participants do fine; those who are very sensitive may use lactase enzyme, such as Lactaid, as directed.
Many people who need to limit gluten/wheat can use the program successfully. If you have celiac disease, you should discuss this with Dr. Conley so we can determine what is appropriate for you.
There are no hidden costs. This is a physician-guided program with specialized staff support, monitoring, and structured tools — not a self-directed “buy products online” approach.
We do not bill insurance directly, but some plans may reimburse part of the program if you submit for reimbursement. You may also use HSA and most FSA accounts for eligible expenses. Restrictions may apply.
